IPSWICH RIVER WATERSHED ASSOCIATION INC

HOME - Ipswich River Watershed Association

The Ipswich River has been named one of the most endangered in the nation due to extreme low-flow conditions. The Ipswich River Watershed Association (IRWA) serves as the voice of the Ipswich River and its watershed. We work to ensure ecological integrity, healthy fisheries, adequate stream flows, clean water, reliable drinking water supplies, and outstanding recreational opportunities for the region. IRWA is dedicated to using sound science and management tools to balance human uses of the river with ecosystem needs.

Contact Us HOME We are the voice of the Ipswich River. Challenges Facing the Ipswich River Polluted rainwater runoff called stormwater is the most significant water quality problem facing the Ipswich River impacting wildlife public access sites and contributing to shellfish bed closures in the estuary. The Ipswich River watershed provides drinking water to 350000 people and thousands of businesses in 14 communities in northeastern Massachusetts. These water withdrawals impact the water levels and temperatures of the river and its tributaries especially in summer when nonessential outdoor water use increases.
