Permafrost is perennially frozen ground that, as it thaws, is causing the land to collapse, creating an environmental justice crisis for Arctic communities whose homes, villages, and ways of living are at risk. It also can release unaccounted-for amounts of greenhouse gasses back into our atmosphere. Permafrost Pathways coordinates leading researchers, Arctic community leaders, Indigenous Knowledge holders, and policymakers from around the world to advance just and equitable solutions to both the local and global impacts of our rapidly warming Arctic. When maps come out, so do stories. And stories help us better understand our place in a changing world. Woodwell Climate cartographers use maps to propel climate science for solutions. Greg Fiske (@greg.fiske ) and Christina Shintani (@cm.shintani ) show that the act of creating maps is not just an end product, but a critical step in the scientific process.
