Kennebec Estuary Land Trust
The Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of the Kennebec Estuary, located in southern Maine. Established in 1989, KELT focuses on protecting the land, water, and wildlife within this vital ecological area.
Mission and Operations
KELT serves as a community-based membership organization working to preserve and restore the natural habitats of the Kennebec Estuary. The trust operates in several towns including Arrowsic, Bath, West Bath, Georgetown, Westport Island, Woolwich, Bowdoinham, and Dresden. Its Board of Directors is comprised of members from these local communities.
Conservation Efforts
KELT protects over 3,000 acres of land through conservation easements and property ownership, safeguarding critical coastal habitats such as tidal marshes. These conservation efforts are crucial due to increasing threats like development and climate change. The trust also engages in citizen science projects, notably bird monitoring programs, which inform its conservation strategies and educate the public about the importance of wildlife preservation.
Community Engagement and Education
KELT promotes community involvement through volunteer opportunities and educational initiatives. By incorporating bird conservation into its broader conservation framework, the organization fosters a sense of stewardship and community engagement. KELT has developed a strong reputation for bird conservation expertise, using data from programs like eBird to guide land acquisition and management decisions.
Accreditation
In February 2014, KELT was accredited by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, a mark of excellence that ensures the organization meets rigorous national standards for quality conservation efforts. This accreditation signifies KELT's commitment to long-term conservation and strategic management.
Challenges and Future Initiatives
The Kennebec Estuary faces ongoing environmental challenges such as pollution, invasive species, and the impacts of climate change. In response, KELT is working to address these challenges through local projects and partnerships, aiming to support both the community and the environment in adapting to climate change. The organization continues to engage with local stakeholders to enhance conservation efforts and protect the ecological integrity of the estuary.

Marshes are so much more than they appear...Telling us stories about our past and helping to protect us in the future. Learn about these intriguing, dynamic habitats and how we can help them to help us! This Thursday, March 20th at 6pm join KELT Programs Director Ruth Indrick over Zoom for this free evening lecture. She will introduce you to the wonder of marshes, from the types of life that can be found in them to the ways that they support our coastal communities. For marshes to best support us and help wildlife now and in the future, they need to be able to adapt to changing sea levels. The program will highlight how some projects in local towns are helping our marshes to be ready for the future. Learn more & register at the link in bio! (fb)
