Advocate for a safe, nuclear free, energy future. Mission StatementRegarding the Educational Purposes andActivities of the New England Coalition on Nuclear Pollution, Inc.The incorporators of New England Coalition on Nuclear Pollution, Inc., came together early in 1971 for the purpose of establishing a coalition of citizens concerned with the environmental effects of nuclear fission in the private sector of society. With this common concern for the social welfare of the general public, they formed the Corporation on April 9, 1971, with the primary objective of educating themselves and their fellow men about such little-understood technical and complex maters, with the expectation that the general public would thereupon express similar concern, for wide public opinion is the best approach to resolve these environmental problems in our society. Realizing that the laws prescribed that there should be public hearings by the governmental agencies responsible for the controls of private nuclear plants, these incorporators had two choices; one, to ask to be heard at hearings as a small ineffective action group, or, two, to establish an educational organization designed to provide expert knowledge to the general public so that the voices of many could be heard both within and without the walls of the hearing rooms. They chose the latter course and organized the New England Coalition on Nuclear Pollution, Inc., for the purpose of: “Investigating the safety, suitability and environmental effect of nuclear power plants; Educating the public as to the nature and significance of nuclear power plants; Organizing activities designed to inform the public and appropriate governmental agencies of the hazards and risks associated with nuclear power plants; Participating in governmental agency hearings held in connection with licensing plants; Engaging in all activities and programs consistent with the above objectives; Taking all action necessary or appropriate to accomplishment or fulfillment of the above goals.”The officers and directors of the newly-founded Corporation set about to engage the services of experts in nuclear matters for the purpose of demonstrating to the public, as the principal intervenor at the public hearings, that here was a highly-qualified organization well worth listening to. This move has borne fruit, as evidenced by the quantity and quality of newspaper articles written about the Atomic Energy Commission’s hearings on the licensing of the Vernon nuclear power plant. Lectures before citizen groups, discussions on radio programs, the newsletter mailings to interested citizens have been undertake and will be expanded as funds permit.
