Chicago, IL | Wednesday, June 25: Join us for an evening of festivities as we relive Hazel Scott’s brilliant arc from international stardom to ultimate obscurity as Scott biographer Karen Chilton delivers an audio-visual tour de force. Chilton will share never-before-seen film footage and photographs from Scott’s concerts, movie career, and intimate moments from her life. Following the sharing and exploration, Toni-Marie Montgomery, dean emerita of the Bienen School of Music, Northwestern University, and Chicago Jazz Philharmonic artistic director Orbert Davis join Chilton onstage for a lively exchange. What Is Third Stream. Gunther Schuller coined the term Third Stream in 1957 to describe a new musical genre merging jazz and classical traditions. Orbert Davis Chicago Jazz Philharmonic presents Third Stream as a way to bridge communities educate the next generation of musicians encourage crosscultural dialogue and expand creative practice. Bristling innovation and mainstream melodymaking classical modernism and free jazz improvisation all these elements and others converge when CJP takes the stage.
