Overview

The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Inc. (RPO) is a U.S. nonprofit organization based in Rochester, New York. It operates one of the city's most prominent arts institutions, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.

History

The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra was founded by George Eastman in 1922. Eastman, the founder of Eastman Kodak Company, wanted to bring high-quality symphonic music to Rochester. The orchestra's first performance took place on March 28, 1923. Initially, it was closely tied to the Eastman Theatre Orchestra and shared conductors such as Eugene Goossens and Albert Coates.

In 1975, the RPO was formally incorporated as a nonprofit organization, previously operating under the Rochester Civic Music Association. This change aimed to enhance community recognition and support for the orchestra.

Musical Activities

The RPO is known for its commitment to education and community engagement. It offers numerous concerts and activities throughout the year, many of which are free to the public. The orchestra has been a pioneer in music education and outreach programs, seeking to involve all members of the community.

The RPO has had several notable conductors, including Erich Leinsdorf, who helped elevate its national profile through recordings. Recent conductors include Ward Stare, who served as music director from 2014 to 2021, and Andreas Delfs, who joined in 2021.

Educational Programs

The Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (RPYO), founded in 1970, is part of the RPO's educational mission. The RPYO provides musical training for high school students and offers opportunities for them to perform alongside the RPO.

Awards and Recognition

The RPO has received several awards for its programming, including multiple ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming, and it was honored with the New York State Governor's Arts Award in 2002. Notably, the orchestra won a Grammy Award in 2020 for Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Jennifer Higdon's Harp Concerto.

Concert Venues

The RPO primarily performs at the Eastman Theatre, located within the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. This venue has been its home since its inception and remains a key part of its identity.

Mission

The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Inc., continues to uphold its mission to enrich the community through music performances and educational initiatives. It emphasizes diversity, equity, and inclusion in its programming and operations.
