Whiffenpoofs of Yale University Inc
Overview
Whiffenpoofs of Yale University Inc. is a nonprofit organization associated with the Whiffenpoofs, the oldest collegiate a cappella singing group in the United States. Founded in 1909, the Whiffenpoofs are a prominent part of Yale University's musical traditions.
History
The Whiffenpoofs were founded by five members of the Yale Glee Club's prestigious Varsity Quartet, who met weekly at Mory's Temple Bar. Originally, the group was a casual ensemble seeking to enjoy singing in a relaxed setting beyond formal performances. Over time, they evolved into a well-known entity within and outside Yale, with a strong tradition of performing at various venues and events.
Name Origin
The name "Whiffenpoofs" originated from a humorous tale told by comedian Joseph Cawthorn in a Broadway musical, where he invented the word to describe a mythical fish. This whimsical name resonated with the group's lighthearted spirit, and it was adopted by the founders, including Denton 'Goat' Fowler.
Activities and Traditions
- Performances: The Whiffenpoofs perform extensively throughout the year, including regular gatherings at Mory's Temple Bar on Monday nights. They conduct a three-month world tour during the summer and sing at numerous events on campus and internationally.
- Musical Director and Business Manager: Each year, the group selects a musical director (Pitchpipe) and a business manager (Popocatepetl) from their members.
- Tradition of "The Whiffenpoof Song": The group's iconic song, adapted from Rudyard Kipling's "Gentlemen-Rankers," is sung at every concert as a symbol of tradition and camaraderie.
Notable Performances
The Whiffenpoofs have appeared on several television shows and have performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and the White House. Their repertoire includes Yale classics, jazz standards, and more recent hits.
Evolution of Membership
Historically all-male, the Whiffenpoofs began to admit members of all genders in 2018. This change marked a significant evolution in the group's inclusion policies.
Cultural Impact
The Whiffenpoofs have been a part of Yale's cultural heritage for over a century, representing a blend of tradition, musical excellence, and friendship. Their legacy continues to influence new generations of Yale students and a cappella groups nationwide.
