North Brentwood Civic Association
The North Brentwood Civic Association (NBCA), formerly known as the North Brentwood Citizens Association, is a community-focused nonprofit organization founded in 1906 by William J. Conway. Conway served as its president for five consecutive years. The Association's name was officially changed to North Brentwood Civic Association in 2018.
Mission and Purpose
The NBCA is dedicated to protecting the life, health, property, and general welfare of North Brentwood residents. It collaborates with local, state, and federal governing bodies to secure funding for educational and recreational facilities, aiming to preserve the community's cultural heritage and promote growth and respect throughout the town.
Activities and Events
- Community Events: The NBCA organizes and sponsors a range of community activities, including:
- Family Day
- North Brentwood Day
- National Night Out
- Back-to-School Night
- Trunk or Treat
- Holiday Tree Lighting and Decorations Contest
- Social Support: The association also conducts visitations to the elderly, sick, and shut-in members of the community.
- Support for Local Facilities: It actively supports institutions such as the North Brentwood Community Center.
Structure
All residents of North Brentwood are considered members of the NBCA. While membership dues are not mandatory, they are encouraged to support the Association's activities, with an annual contribution of $15 per household requested during the first quarter of each year. Meetings are open to all residents and are held monthly at the North Brentwood Community Center.
Governance
The NBCA is led by a board of officers, including a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and chaplain.
Historical Significance
North Brentwood itself holds historical significance as the oldest incorporated African-American municipality in Prince George's County, Maryland. The town has a rich cultural and architectural heritage, with the North Brentwood Historic District listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
