Skunk cabbage, one of the first plants to bloom in spring, is thriving along the stream banks of Morris preserve! As the temperatures warm, this unique plant, with its large, glossy leaves and distinctive flower, signals the arrival of spring, thriving in the wet, shaded areas where other plants are just beginning to awaken. ☀️ The plant gets its name from the strong, unpleasant odor it releases, especially when its flowers are disturbed. This scent, reminiscent of a skunk’s spray, serves to attract pollinators like flies and beetles, which are drawn to the smell. Despite its off-putting aroma, skunk cabbage plays an important role in early spring ecosystems, providing food and shelter for a variety of creatures. 🌱 #NSOLF #NorthSalemNY #NYNonProfit #ConservationThatsWorking (fb)
