THE JOSEPH BRODSKY MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIP FUND

Home – Joseph Brodsky

Before his death in 1996 Joseph Brodsky was working to establish a Russian Academy in Rome. A group of his friends are working to continue his effort. The Joseph Brodsky Memorial Fellowship Fund had its beginnings in 1995, when Mr. Brodsky approached the mayor of Rome to urge the creation of a Russian Academy there. “Italy was a revelation to the Russians,” he wrote to the mayor, referring to Russia’s nineteenth-century tradition of artistic pilgrimage to Italy. “Now it can become the source of their renaissance.” A group of Mr. Brodsky’s friends assembled after his death to continue his effort, by arranging for Russian writers, artists, and scholars of limited means to travel to Rome for periods of work and study. A number of poets and artists have now received three-month residencies at the American Academy in Rome, the Villa Medici, and other sympathetic institutions as Joseph Brodsky Fellows, funded by grants and private donations from America and Europe. In this way we hope to fulfill Mr. Brodsky’s dream of nourishing Russia’s artists with a creative sojourn at the vital crossroads of the ancient and the modern worlds.

A Statement from the Brodsky Fund We the board of the Brodsky Fund are devastated by the current assault on Ukraine the loss of life and security for so many and the grievous harm done to the comity of peoples. We condemn the Russian invasion and yearn for peace and a return to conditions that allow for nourishment of the shared higher calling of art that animated our founding. We are making a donation of a portion of the funds that were raised for our programs for the sustenance of the Ukrainian people. Our fund was founded in 1996 on an elevating shared commitment of writers and artists around the world to a common world culture.
