One week after the 80th Anniversary of VE Day, for this #ThrowbackThursday here's a look at something that helped win the war. Movie theatres were a popular gathering place on the #homefront during #WWII, which made them natural places for important wartime efforts such as fundraising and blood drives for the Red Cross, scrap metal drives to collect iron an steel to recycle into tanks, guns, etc., and War Bond and Stamp sales to help raise the enormous amount of money the U.S. government needed to pay for the war effort. The #LoewsJersey certainly did its part by, among other things, offering War Bonds & Stamps for sale to its patrons. The first photo shows the upper section of glass from one of the two inside ticket booths in the Outer Lobby -- which is to say, not the main booth located outside, on Kennedy Boulevard. When #FriendsOfTheLoews found the glass in the Theatre's basement years ago, as we were cleaning he building up, its lower portion was badly smashed. Buy happily, the upper part, although cracked, was recoverable -- including the image of a vigilant-looking Minuteman that was an iconic element in many WWII-era War Bond ads. It's a tangible link with the time, more than eight decades ago, when the Loew's was at one of the epicenters of the most titanic clash the world had ever known -- not only showing movies and newsreels about the War to an interested and anxious community, but also by encouraging its patrons to directly support the war effort. #history #JerseyCity #preservation #classicfilms (fb)
