We first met Joel Carter this past February after he had served a 23 year drug related prison sentence. He’s been doing pretty well and just became employed with Prime Home Lending mortgage company. But the real story of Joel is his current lawsuit against MDOC as he is bringing light to a dark secret of prisoners being punished for their actions related to their own medical condition. The Detroit Free Press just published an article on this issue and the abhorrent treatment Joel received in prison. Joel spent most of his prison term in solitary confinement due to punishing his behavior that was related to his multiple sclerosis. Even MDOC physicians concluded his actions were tied to his disease. As the attached Free Press article discusses, Joel is devoting his time now to helping those in prison with management of their medical and mental diagnoses. A sad story but through the persistence of Joel, others will not suffer his same fate in prison. https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2025/05/06/detroit-prisoner-joel-carter-solitary-multiple-sclerosis-margolis/83405310007/ (fb)

Some stories just hit at a more emotional level than others. Lindsey, a Vietnam veteran, is one of those stories as he was just released from prison after being there for over 51 years. He was released due to his serious medical condition of cancer, blindness and diabetes. Lindsey is now 77 years of age and has spent pretty much every year of his adult live in prison. His needs are very different than anyone else and we will do all we can to meet those needs. Thankfully, he has two family members that remain in his life namely his daughter and granddaughter. We will do all we can to assist his daughter with her needs as well as she will be his primary caregiver and the plan is to help them obtain a house, furniture etc. We will also assist his daughter with her car repair needs so Lyndsey can get to his doctor appointments etc. We me Lindsey the other day and he was very appreciative of our involvement in helping to make his life a bit easier. Yes, a sad story all around but good to know that as he moves towards the last experiences of his life we can be there to assist him directly and indirectly through the help we will provide to his family. About the organization
- T23 -
Providing a Bridge on the Road to Success From 2007 when Here to Help was launched we have helped over 25000 people in southeastern Michigan who were facing an emergency need. OurReturning Hope to Returning Citizensprogram launched in August 2020 to assist this marginalized group of individuals who are in desperate need of help and no organization was filling that void at all. In January of 2023 we shifted our entire focus to concentrate ONLY on assisting returning citizens as the need is so significant for those coming back from prison andwho have no clothes no food no income no direction no hope etc. We now have over 5000 people in our program.
