Blacks In Government

Blacks In Government (BIG) is a national nonprofit organization in the United States dedicated to advocacy and career development for Black government employees. It is a 501(c)(3) organization with members across all 50 states and internationally. Established in 1975 and incorporated in 1976, BIG focuses on promoting equity, excellence, and opportunity through professional development, empowerment, and advocacy for African Americans in public service.

History

Blacks In Government was founded by a small group of African American employees at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW) in Rockville, Maryland, now known as the Department of Health and Human Services. The organization originated to address racial challenges faced by Black civil servants at HEW and was initially intended to support federal employees. However, it soon became evident that Black employees at local, state, and municipal government levels encountered similar employment issues. Consequently, BIG expanded its scope to advocate on behalf of Black government workers at all levels. BIG was formally incorporated as a nonprofit organization under the jurisdiction of the District of Columbia in 1976.

Mission and Purpose

BIG’s mission is to promote equity, excellence, and opportunity in public service by advocating for equal opportunity and professional development for Black government employees. It serves as a support and resource group committed to addressing workplace issues related to racial equality and inclusion. The organization seeks to empower African Americans through advocacy and career development training, while also functioning as a community resource and volunteer-driven association.

Activities and Impact

Blacks In Government organizes training programs, advocacy initiatives, and professional development opportunities to enhance the careers of Black government employees. Its activities include addressing workplace discrimination, promoting fairness and inclusion in government agencies, and fostering leadership among African American public servants. The organization also mobilizes collective strength to confront systemic workplace and community challenges, aiming to improve conditions for Black employees and other marginalized groups.

With chapters across the country, including longstanding ones such as the William D. Barber, Jr. Chapter at the Environmental Protection Agency headquarters, BIG has established itself as a vital entity in the landscape of civil rights and public service advocacy.

Organizational Structure

BIG operates as a membership-driven organization primarily supported by volunteers. Its governance includes elected officers and regional representatives who coordinate efforts locally and nationally. The organization has established a presence in federal, state, and municipal government sectors, promoting justice and equal opportunity in public employment.

Blacks In Government continues to be a leading advocate for the rights and professional advancement of Black government employees, striving to ensure equity and excellence in all aspects of public service.

Message from Honorable David A. Groves National President Challenging Times This has been an incredibly tumultuous week and my heart and prayers are with those who were placed on Administrative Leave earlier this week. While the media has reached out requesting interviews I felt it was essential to address the members of Blacks In Government BIG first. Over the past several days I have consulted with our Legal Review and Communications Chairs and CoChairs.
