A cheery trill, a flash of black wings, and a spot of red. If you find yourself in a wetland or field this spring, you may notice these telltale signs of the Red-winged Blackbird. The distinctive red wing with a yellow stripe is only present on adult males. Females and juveniles are camouflage experts, with their streaky mix of brown, white, and gold. Red-winged blackbirds return to Vermont in late February or early March, and will often be seen in large flocks, each singing their characteristic melody.
