Today marks the end of a meaningful chapter as we officially conclude The Arc New York Historic Archives project here at WWAARC. We came together with current and former members of The Arc New York as we said goodbye to The Archives and reflected on the many memories, stories, and dedicated efforts that brought this project to life. In 2016, The Arc New York Historic Archives Workgroup was established by The Arc New York’s then-President, Laura Kennedy, WWAARC’s Board President, Anne Marie Lockhart, and former longtime Executive Director of The Arc New York, Marc Brandt, alongside many others. This Workgroup had the goal of creating an official Archive and making the Archive publicly accessible. The Archive was relocated in 2019 to our Queensbury location. Since then, tens of thousands of documents, publications, and other materials have been inventoried, scanned, and continue to be prepared for public sharing on The Arc New York online collection website (link below). We would like to recognize our current WWAARC employees who have worked diligently to complete the preservation of our history: Regina Irwin, Kristen Martin, Sherri Brown, Patricia (Pat) Savage, and Elizabeth Potash. Together over the last several years, they have demonstrated care and a commitment towards preserving and creating digital records of the collection. Thanks to their hard work, our collective efforts are nearly complete. This one-of-a-kind collection will soon move on to the College of Staten Island, the former site of Willowbrook. Materials will be catalogued, preserved, and made available to researchers, students, journalists, and community members. Their work will help sustain our history, inform program and policy development, and support education and advocacy to ensure continued inclusion and opportunity for people with disabilities.
