Little League Baseball Inc

Little League Baseball Inc., commonly referred to as Little League Baseball and Softball, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in the United States. It is recognized as the largest organized youth sports organization globally, with operations in every U.S. state and more than 80 countries.

History

The organization was founded in 1939 by Carl Edwin Stotz in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Initially, it consisted of three teams sponsored by local businesses and played its first official game on June 6, 1939. Over the years, Little League has grown significantly, becoming an international entity with thousands of leagues worldwide.

Mission and Philosophy

Little League's mission is to assist youth in developing discipline, teamwork, courage, loyalty, and good character while promoting physical health. The organization is designed to develop "superior citizens rather than superior athletes." Its operations are guided by the principles of character, courage, and loyalty.

Structure

Little League operates on multiple levels, starting from the local level, where each league is autonomous and governed by a board of directors. Leagues are grouped into districts for administrative and tournament purposes. These districts fall under regional centers, which provide support and oversight. Internationally, Little League maintains a strong network of regional centers around the world.

Programs

Little League offers baseball and softball divisions for children ages 4 to 16. Divisions include Tee Ball, Minor Leagues, Little Leagues (Major Leagues), Junior Leagues, Senior Leagues, and Big Leagues. It also supports the Little League Challenger Division, which provides opportunities for children with physical or mental challenges.

Events

One of the most notable events organized by Little League is the Little League World Series, held annually at the Little League International Complex in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. This event showcases the best teams from around the world competing in a series of games.

Impact

Little League has played a significant role in the lives of millions of children, teaching life lessons that extend beyond the sports field. Many players who began their careers in Little League have gone on to become successful athletes in Major League Baseball (MLB) and other professional sports leagues.
