A Christian Ministry in the National Parks

A Christian Ministry in the National Parks (ACMNP) is a non-profit Christian ministry operating within the United States National Parks. Established in 1951 by Warren Ost, a Princeton Seminary student, the organization began its work in Yellowstone National Park by providing interdenominational worship services to park employees, residents, and visitors[2][4].

History

Warren Ost founded ACMNP after working a summer in Yellowstone and observing a need for faith-based activities among park inhabitants and visitors. His initial interdenominational service, held in the bar area of the Old Faithful Inn, marked the start of this ministry[2]. Initially supported by the National Council of Churches, ACMNP became an independent, interdenominational organization and a registered 501(c)(3) in 1971. The ministry has grown over nearly 75 years to send about 150-200 team members to over 75 locations across 45 national parks annually[2].

Mission and Activities

ACMNP aims to provide Christian community and leadership within the national parks, serving through interdenominational worship services held on Sundays. It emphasizes the integration of work, worship, and service in these natural settings, fostering personal growth and community building among participants[1][3]. Each summer, the organization leads approximately 1,400 worship services, attended by more than 30,000 people, contributing to a total of over 100,000 services held since its inception[2].

Leadership and Governance

ACMNP values diversity across denominations and cultures. The National Board includes representatives from various denominations and sectors, ensuring a broad perspective in its governance[2]. In recent years, the organization has adopted a co-leadership model to guide its future development.

Programs and Opportunities

ACMNP offers opportunities for young adults to participate in its ParkLife Ministry program, combining work in hospitality industries within national parks with Christian service and outdoor adventures. Participants secure seasonal jobs and engage in relational ministry, while also leading weekly worship services. This program emphasizes community building and personal growth through a blend of work, worship, and exploration of nature[3][5].
