We are flippin' out over the official opening of our brand-new Humboldt penguin habitat— Penguin Point! 🐧🎉 This new state-of-the-art facility features modern filtration and sterilization systems, a medical isolation area, a breeding and nesting zone, and a guest encounter space. Humboldt penguins are adapted to warm climates, and will thrive in our New England weather both in their indoor and outdoor spaces thanks to updated heating and cooling systems. Countless hours of thought, intricate details, and hard work were put into making Penguin Point a place where our Humboldt penguins will live their best lives. They are already making a splash, and we can't wait for you to come meet them! Our hearts are heavy as we announce the passing of howler monkey, Ramone, a truly special soul who touched the lives of staff and guests alike. Ramone passed peacefully, surrounded by his caretaker team and troop members, on Tuesday, May 20th. He had been under close observation for some significant changes in his mobility over the last 5 days, likely related to the progression of his carefully managed chronic renal failure. On Tuesday morning, based on Ramone’s behavior and demeanor, our animal care team decided it was in his best interest to proceed with euthanasia. In 2021 Ramone was diagnosed with renal disease and in 2022 he was diagnosed and underwent surgery for a pseudoaneurysm in his right leg. Both of these challenges impacted Ramone’s life expectancy – but through excellent veterinary and husbandry care, we were able to enjoy his company a lot longer than expected, and for that, we are forever grateful. At 22 years old, Ramone exceeded the average howler monkey life expectancy of 15 years in native habitats and up to 20 years in human care. Ramone arrived here in 2017 from the Houston Zoo, and was paired with our female howler, Finley. They produced three offspring: Ryder who currently lives at Caldwell Zoo in Texas; Piper who is at Hattiesburg Zoo in Mississippi; and Tucker, who still resides here with us.
