The Toy Museum of NY is actually a museum with a live theatre show about toys. The Toy Museum is pioneering a new definition of the toy theatre to represent a one-of-a-kind theatre where real and pretend toys come to life. The theatre program is available to schools in all five boroughs of New York City. Reservations by teachers and other professionals are made at a cost that is affordable for the student populations. The show is interactive, informative, educational, and entertaining; students are invited to participate on and off stage. One of the objectives of the performance is to show the students how old toys can be appreciated in different, creative ways and how they play a part in American history. Participation is encouraged through questions posed by the actors to the students and through interspersed interactive bits in which students are invited onto the stage and partake in the storytelling.Over the past 10 years, The Toy Museum of NY has expanded impact through outreach orchestrated through strong partnerships with the New York Transit Museum, the South Street Seaport Museum, and NJ Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation as well as many other prominent museums throughout the USA and libraries in New York City. Over 15,000 school children visit the Museum annually. It is the long-term goal of The Museum to utilize technology to further the impact of collections, theater experiences, and special events – reaching young people in all corners of the United States, as well as senior citizens, toy collectors, and families.

The Toy Museum of NY

The Toy Museum of NY is a nonprofit educational organization founded in 1999 by Marlene Hochman. It is dedicated to educating the public on the significance of dolls and toys in culture and history through art and play. Despite its name, the museum does not require a physical location to deliver its educational programming, instead utilizing virtual platforms and live performances to reach its audience.

Mission

The museum's mission is to highlight the importance of toys in our cultural heritage, using them as tools for education and creative development. By focusing on the historical and artistic value of toys, the museum aims to foster imagination and cultural diversity among its audience.

Programs and Activities

The Toy Museum of NY offers innovative educational programs, including live performances and hands-on workshops. These activities are designed to engage both children and educators, promoting creativity and understanding of the role toys play in shaping our culture.

In addition to its hands-on programs, the museum is involved in the production of educational content, such as the children’s video show "Queen Marlene of The Toy Museum," which Marlene Hochman both stars in and produces. This show brings the history of toys to life through engaging storytelling, aiming to inspire children as future inventors.

Governance and Leadership

As of past reports, the museum's leadership has included Laurie Gallo as Chairperson, along with other members such as Barbara Vivian and Helen Krump serving key roles. However, current specific leadership details might not be readily available.

The Toy Museum of NY is recognized as an accredited educational institution and is chartered by the University of the State of New York Education Department. It also operates as a registered charity and is an approved vendor for the New York City Department of Education.

Impact

By combining education with entertainment, the museum has captivated audiences across New York City and beyond, contributing to the educational landscape by ensuring that the history and cultural significance of toys are preserved and transmitted to future generations. Despite lacking a traditional physical space, the museum's impact is felt through its extensive outreach and innovative delivery methods.
