With equal measures of pluck and positivity, little orphan Annie charms everyone’s hearts despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. She is determined to find the parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of the orphanage that is run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan. With the help of the other girls in the orphanage, Annie escapes to the wondrous world of NYC. In adventure after fun-filled adventure, Annie foils Miss Hannigan and even befriends President Franklin Delano Roosevelt! She finds a new home and family in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary, Grace Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy. Annie had its world premiere on August 10, 1976, at the Goodspeed Opera House. Kristen Vigard was the first actress to play the title role. However, she was replaced after a week of performances by Andrea McArdle, who would go on to debut the role on Broadway. Several well-known actresses have portrayed Annie in various productions. Notable names include Shelley Bruce, Sarah Hyland, Andrea McArdle, Alyssa Milano, Alicia Morton, Sarah Jessica Parker, Aileen Quinn, Molly Ringwald, Sadie Sink, and Allison Smith. The original Broadway production was nominated for ten Tony Awards (winning seven) in 1977: Best Musical (won), Best Book of a Musical (won), Best Original Score (won), Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical (Reid Shelton), Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical (Andrea McArdle), Best Direction of a Musical, Best Choreography (won), Best Scenic Design (won), and Best Costume Design (won).
