He won NBC’s Showtime at the Apollo three times; danced at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan in Honor! A Celebration of the African-American Cultural Legacy, presented by Carnegie Hall and curated by the opera singer Jessye Norman; At the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem; with the Montclair-based singer and pianist Geri Allen, adding his feet to the rhythms and to Ms. Allen’s vocals. He thrilled audiences at the Zurich Theater Spektakel, in August 2010 when he performed with Savion Glover and Marshall Davis Jr. in Bare Soundz. Chestnut has also performed on tour as a special guest with such prominent Jazz musicians as Christian McBride, Cyrus Chestnut and Thelonius Monk III. A New Jersey native, and one of tap’s brightest stars, Chestnut began dancing at age 5, and was a gold medalist in the NAACP Act-So competition, and was an International Tap Association Japan Representative. #TAPOLOGYSUMMERTAPINTENSIVE #ARTISTSPOTLIGHT Imani Taylor | @_imanimaat Imani Ma’at AknhmenRa Amen Taylor, hailing from Norfolk, Virginia, finds her roots deeply embedded in Detroit’s rich legacy of artists, activists, and leaders. As a dancer and drummer, she immerses herself in ancient rhythms, infusing them into her artistry. Through dedicated study of traditional West African drum and dance, African spirituality, and holistic teaching methods, Imani Ma’at shares these customs with communities and students, while creating safe spaces and bridging African American youth to their heritage. As both an educator and an artist, and the cofounder of the grassroots organization Flip the Switch 529, she extends these practices globally, fostering cultural unity. A Kresge Arts Fellow and currently teaching at Detroit School of the Arts, Imani Ma’at is a multidisciplinary artist and cultural custodian committed to empowering youth and nurturing global connections through the transformative essence of African Diasporic arts and culture.
