Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus is a global Catholic fraternal service order founded on March 29, 1882, by Blessed Michael J. McGivney. Originally established as a mutual benefit society for working-class and immigrant Catholics in the United States, the organization has grown to encompass over 2.1 million members worldwide as of 2024. Its core principles are Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism.

History and Mission

The Knights of Columbus was formed to provide financial assistance to its members and their families. Over time, it has evolved into a significant charitable organization, focusing on local and global issues. Its mission includes supporting Catholic education, parishes, and dioceses, while advocating for Catholic ethics on public policy issues.

Charitable Activities

Charity is at the heart of the Knights' mission. Their charitable activities include:

• Disaster Relief: They have a long history of providing aid in the aftermath of natural disasters, starting with a flood in Kansas in 1903 and continuing with significant contributions in more recent years.
• Refugee Support: The organization has supported refugees globally, particularly in the Middle East and at the US-Mexico border.
• Health Initiatives: The Knights have been involved in health-related projects, such as funding ultrasound machines to help expecting mothers and supporting the Special Olympics.
• Education and Youth Programs: They offer scholarships for seminarians and support young Catholics through programs like the Columbian Squires.

Financial Structure

The Knights operate a wholly owned insurance company, which is a Fortune 1000 company, providing more than $121 billion in life insurance coverage as of 2023. Additionally, they manage investments through the Knights of Columbus Asset Advisors, aligning their investments with Catholic principles.

Structure and Affiliations

The organization is led by a Supreme Knight, currently Patrick E. Kelly, and includes more than 17,000 local councils worldwide. While membership is limited to practicing Catholic men, women can participate through affiliated groups like the Columbiettes.
