North Lindenhurst Volunteer Fire Department Inc.
The North Lindenhurst Volunteer Fire Department Inc., with an Employer Identification Number (EIN) of 112561254, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing firefighting and emergency services in the North Lindenhurst area of New York.
History
The department was founded in July 1957, following a pivotal fire incident on Christmas Eve in 1956 that led to the loss of a young child. This event emphasized the need for a local fire department, prompting the North Lindenhurst Civic Association to take action. The department officially began active service on January 1, 1960. The first firehouse, constructed in 1958, was largely built by its volunteer members.
In its early years, the department started with two primary units: Company 1 and Company 2. The first piece of equipment was a 1936 American-LaFrance engine, purchased from the Hempstead Fire Department, while the second was a 1947 Mack pumper acquired from Valley Stream Fire Department. The initial years of operation were marked by numerous brush fires and mutual aid calls to neighboring fire departments.
Operations and Training
Today, the department continues to play a vital role in emergency response, managing over 900 rescue and 300 fire-related calls annually. It maintains specialized training in areas such as confined space rescue, heavy rescue operations, railroad emergencies, wildfire operations, rapid intervention teams, and responses to weapons of mass destruction incidents.
Community Contributions
Over the years, the North Lindenhurst Volunteer Fire Department has contributed to several significant community events and disasters. Members were involved in responding to the 1995 brush fires in Eastern Long Island and were among the first responders to deliver aid following the TWA Flight 800 tragedy. During the 9/11 attacks, the department also played a crucial role in supporting affected areas.
Organizational Structure
The department includes various companies, such as the Engine Heavy Rescue Company 1, Hook Ladder Engine Company 3, Engine Company 2, and Fire Police Company 5. Each company contributes to the overall mission of protecting life and property within the community.
Legacy and Evolution
From its inception, the North Lindenhurst Volunteer Fire Department has evolved significantly, both in technology and capacity. While its core mission remains unchanged, the department continues to adapt to new challenges and technologies, ensuring it remains a critical component of community safety.
