ARC creates participatory and hands-on programs that:Reinforce students’ learning through applied science, technology, engineering and mathematical (STEM) conceptsStimulate and foster critical, creative and problem-solving skills for students and teachersEstablish partnerships among families, schools, communities and businessesEncourage meaningful design programs as part of basic educationIn using architecture and design as a springboard to STEM learning, ARC programs offer a unique opportunity to students and educators in that it:Uses design as a thinking model, a method of solving problems paralleling the engineering process.Brings in elements of architecture and engineering to enhance math and science concepts students are already learning.Allows application of curricular concepts for authentic learning.Integrates art, so that design-based thinking becomes a mode of thought across many subjects (transforming STEM into STEAM).Incorporates 21st century skills of collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking.Makes connections to daily life, building on students' existing knowledge.Allows students to approach learning through varied learning styles and abilities.
