Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE), commonly known as the Elks Lodge or simply The Elks, is a prominent American fraternal order and charitable organization. Founded on February 16, 1868, in New York City by Charles Algernon Sidney Vivian, the Elks have evolved into a nationwide brotherhood focused on community service, patriotism, and mutual aid.
History
Originally established as a social club for minstrel show performers known as the "Jolly Corks," the organization transformed into the BPOE with the intention of supporting members in need. This shift was prompted by the untimely death of a fellow performer, highlighting the need for collective assistance. By 1890, the Elks had expanded to include 173 lodges across the United States.
Historically, the Elks were exclusive, initially barring women and minorities. However, significant changes in the late 20th century have led to a more inclusive membership policy. Today, the organization admits all U.S. citizens over the age of 21 who affirm belief in God.
Pillars and Activities
The BPOE is guided by four core pillars: Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity. Members engage in various philanthropic activities, including support for veterans, youth scholarships, and disaster relief. The organization is particularly noted for its "Hoop Shoot" contest, a national free throw competition for youth.
The Elks maintain a close partnership with organizations like the American Red Cross, providing assistance during natural disasters and other crises. Their commitment to patriotism includes civil defense programs, bond drives, and observances like Flag Day.
Structure and Membership
The BPOE operates through a democratic structure, with members participating in national conventions to set statutes. The organization has over 750,000 members across more than 1,900 local lodges. The leadership, including the national president known as the Grand Exalted Ruler, serves without salary.
Philanthropy and Programs
The Elks are a major provider of college scholarships and have disbursed more than $3.6 billion in cash, goods, and services over the course of their history. Annually, they donate over $200 million to support youth, veterans, and civic programs. The Elks National Foundation, a 501(c)3 charitable arm, plays a central role in these efforts, focusing on building stronger communities through grants and volunteer service.
Their commitment to veterans includes rehabilitation support, adaptive sports programs, and the "Welcome Home" initiative for homeless veterans. The organization also sponsors the Drug Awareness Program, one of the largest volunteer-led drug awareness initiatives in the U.S.
Symbols and Traditions
The Elks' symbol is the elk, chosen for its noble qualities. Their colors are royal purple and white, reflecting the organization's historical and symbolic significance. A notable tradition is the nightly "Hour of Recollection" toast to absent members, performed at every meeting.
Legacy
Despite its historical exclusivity, the BPOE has evolved to become a diverse and inclusive organization, reflecting broader societal changes. The Elks' dedication to charity, patriotism, and community service has made them a cornerstone of American fraternal organizations.
