Cuttyhunk Yacht Club Inc
The Cuttyhunk Yacht Club Inc is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in Cuttyhunk, Massachusetts, known for its rich history and contribution to sailing education and community engagement.
History
The Cuttyhunk Yacht Club has its origins in the 1930s when friends of Connie Wood, a prominent landowner on the island, rented summer homes. Initially, these "summer kids" enjoyed activities like tennis, swimming, diving, playing ping-pong, and sailing. The club's early boats were moored at a boathouse near the Town Dock. However, the devastating hurricane of 1938 destroyed the boathouse and most of the boats, halting the club's activities.
Revival and Growth
Interest in sailing revived in the 1950s as children of the original members brought their own children to the island. On April 14, 1956, the new Cuttyhunk Yacht Club was formally launched at the home of Robert and Eleanor Moore. Kitsy and Wye Garfield donated land for the current clubhouse, which was constructed by A.P. Tilton and Allan Potter. Since its revival, the club has focused on sailing instruction for children aged 6 to 16, teaching essential skills like knot-tying, rowing, sailing, racing, and safe capsize procedures.
Programs and Community Engagement
Today, the Cuttyhunk Yacht Club offers a variety of programs aimed at fostering a love for sailing and community involvement among its young participants. Many past participants have gone on to become instructors and leaders within the club. The club's activities are a testament to its enduring spirit and commitment to maritime education and community development.
Leadership and Governance
The club is led by a team of officers and board members who oversee its operations and ensure the continuation of its mission. Current leadership includes Chip Bradish as Commodore, Michael Guenther as Vice Commodore, Jay Conway as Treasurer, and Rebecca Hornbach as Rear Commodore, supported by other dedicated board members[1].
Nonprofit Status
As a designated 501(c)(3) organization, the Cuttyhunk Yacht Club Inc is supported by contributions that may be deductible as charitable donations under the U.S. tax code[2]. This status reflects its educational and charitable purposes, focusing on community development through sailing-related activities.
