Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC)
Overview
Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children, commonly abbreviated as ROMAC, is a nonprofit humanitarian organization that operates as a trust under the name "Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children Pty Ltd as Trustee for The ROMAC Gift Fund." It is primarily supported by Rotary Districts across Australia and New Zealand, with the mission to facilitate life-saving and dignity-restoring surgeries for children from developing countries in the Oceania region.
History and Establishment
ROMAC was founded on the vision of Rotarian PP Barrie Cooper from Bendigo, Australia, in 1985, and officially began operations in 1988. It has since grown into a well-established program endorsed by all Australian and New Zealand Rotary Districts and recognized as a Multi-District Activity Rotary Programme by Rotary International.
Mission and Objectives
The primary objective of ROMAC is to provide access to critical surgical interventions for children under the age of 15 who are afflicted by life-threatening or congenitally disfiguring conditions that cannot be treated in their home countries. ROMAC aims to restore dignity and hope to these children by offering them the best possible surgical and medical expertise available in Australia and New Zealand.
Structure and Operations
ROMAC operates entirely with volunteer staff, including its governing board composed of Rotarians from both countries. This structure allows ROMAC to maintain minimal fixed costs, ensuring that nearly 100% of donations and grants are spent directly on patient care. Local Rotary Clubs and District Chairs collaborate closely to facilitate referrals, evaluate medical needs, and arrange surgeries. Renowned surgeons in Australia and New Zealand often donate their time and skills to assist in these surgeries.
Community Engagement and Governance
The organization relies heavily on community support and engages Rotary clubs at all levels to fund and support surgeries for children. High-quality governance is maintained through a strategic management process, ensuring transparency and accountability. During their recovery, children and their caregivers are hosted by families in New Zealand, fostering international understanding and cultural exchange.
Financial Management
Due to its efficient volunteer-based model, ROMAC ensures that almost all donated funds are utilized for the medical treatment and care of the children, making it an exceptionally effective nonprofit organization in terms of resource allocation. The absence of paid staff and physical infrastructure maximizes the impact of every donation.
