ABC In Darien, Inc.

Overview

ABC In Darien, Inc. is a nonprofit organization affiliated with the national A Better Chance (ABC) program. It is one of 20 community school programs (CSP) under the ABC umbrella. The organization's primary goal is to significantly increase the number of well-educated young women of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society.

History

Founded in 1980, ABC In Darien welcomed its first class of six female scholars in the fall of 1981. Over its more than 40-year history, the program has successfully graduated 58 scholars from Darien High School, many of whom have gone on to attend prestigious universities and pursue notable careers.

Programs and Services

ABC In Darien offers four-year academic and boarding scholarships to young women of color from urban areas to attend Darien High School, which is ranked as one of the top high schools in Connecticut. The organization provides a supportive living environment through its ABC House, where scholars reside with live-in resident directors. Residents are encouraged to engage in extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, performing arts, and volunteer organizations.

Support Structure

The program is supported by a diverse group of stakeholders, including an active board of directors, academic tutors, college counselors, local host families, and volunteer drivers. This network helps scholars access various opportunities within the Darien community.

Governance and Finance

ABC In Darien operates as a 501(c)(3) organization, making donations tax-deductible. The organization's financials are diversified, with significant contributions from charitable donations, investment income, and other revenue streams. Governance includes a formal orientation for new board members and written agreements outlining roles and responsibilities.

Impact

Through its rigorous academic preparation and inclusive community engagement, ABC In Darien has a 100% graduation rate from Darien High School. Graduates have gone on to attend leading universities such as MIT, Cornell, and the University of Virginia. The organization fosters lifelong friendships among its scholars, creating a network of support that extends beyond their time in Darien.
