Canadian Dermatology Foundation
The Canadian Dermatology Foundation (CDF) is a registered Canadian charity dedicated to advancing dermatology through original research. Established in 1969 by a group of 13 visionary dermatologists, the CDF focuses on supporting scientific and educational activities with the potential to grow basic and applied dermatology research in Canada[1][2].
Mission and Focus
The foundation's mission is centered around excellence in disease research of the skin, hair, and nails. It supports dermatology researchers by providing funding opportunities that undergo rigorous peer review. These reviews assess both the scientific merit of proposed studies and their potential to improve patients' lives. The CDF offers research grants and the Dr. Frederick Kalz Bursary, which is exclusively available to Canadian citizens[3].
Milestones and Achievements
Over the years, the CDF has marked several significant milestones:
- 1969: The foundation was established by 13 dermatologists to champion dermatologic research[2].
- 1974: The British Columbia Dermatology Foundation amalgamated with the CDF[2].
- 1979: The George S. Williamson Fund merged with the CDF[2].
- 1990: The CDF became the sole beneficiary of the $470,000 Winefride Raye estate[2].
- 1991: The Dr. Frederick Kalz Fund was established[2].
- 1992: Introduced the "CDF Practitioner of the Year Award"[2].
- 1994: Launched the Corporate Benefactor Program[2].
- 2003: Established the Edwin Brown – CDA Endowment research grant[2].
- 2005: Created the CDF Colin Ramsay Endowment Fund[2].
- 2008: Introduced the Benefactor Life Patron donor level[2].
- 2014: Celebrated its 45th anniversary and awarded $6 million in grants[2].
- 2016: Established the World Congress of Dermatology Endowment Fund[2].
- 2024: The CDF has invested over $10 million in dermatologic research in Canada[1].
Impact and Donation
Despite significant investment in dermatological research, the CDF continues to receive more research proposals than it can support. Donations to the foundation are crucial as they directly contribute to empowering dermatologists with the tools needed to alleviate suffering and change lives. As a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency, donations to the CDF are eligible for tax receipts[5].
