This spring, the University of Maine announced that 38 faculty members have received tenure and/or promotion or just-cause protection status and promotion effective Sept. 1. The annual announcement recognizes outstanding achievement in scholarship and research, teaching and community engagement. “These 38 faculty have earned tenure or promotion on the basis of their teaching, scholarship and service to the UMaine community,” said John Volin, executive vice president for academic affairs and provost. “Their nationally-recognized excellence advances our land-grant, learner-centered R1 mission. Their achievements enhance our already strong reputation in multiple domains of discovery, research and creative activity, from the humanities to engineering. I note with admiration that this particular cohort of faculty endured and then navigated pandemic-related disruptions and hardship, which makes their accomplishments extraordinarily impressive.” (fb)

Steneck, professor emeritus of oceanography, marine biology and marine policy who retired in 2023, is among nearly 250 new members who will be inducted this October in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “I was shocked when I learned I had been elected to the Academy of Arts and Sciences,” Steneck said. “I didn’t see this coming, but I think arts and sciences pair very well. We all live on the same planet; we see similar things but integrate our experiences in new ways that sometimes shines a new light where it belongs or opens someone’s mind to something new.” Continue reading: https://umaine.edu/news/blog/2025/05/16/umaine-marine-scientist-elected-to-american-academy-of-arts-and-sciences/ (fb)
