#OnThisDay (May 31) in 1912 the Summit County Journal & Breckenridge Bulletin reported that baseball was underway in Summit County! Base ball (spelling at the time) was a major sport in Breckenridge during the late 1800s and early 1900s. At one point, the town had multiple teams and several mining companies fielded their own team, along with all of the surrounding towns. The Breckenridge Reds were not-so-affectionately known as "the pros" due to their ability to recruit players via the railroad. Some of the biggest games took place between the Breckenridge Reds and the Leadville Blues and would include specialty trains to take the players, fans, and band to and from Leadville! 📸A group of men in suits and fedora-style hats crowd the dirt packed baseball field while spectators sit in the grandstand at the Breckenridge, Colorado, ball park, located at the east end of town.
