Hooved Animal Humane Society
The Hooved Animal Humane Society (HAHS) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to promoting the humane treatment of hooved animals. Founded in 1971 by six concerned citizens, HAHS focuses on education, legislation, investigation, and legal intervention to ensure the welfare of these animals[1][5].
Mission and Activities
The mission of HAHS is to create a world where no hooved animal experiences abuse or neglect. To achieve this, HAHS engages in various activities:
- Education: It provides educational programs to prevent abuse and neglect. The organization regularly hosts seminars with professionals such as veterinarians and trainers[1].
- Legislation: HAHS supports legislation that protects hooved animals on state and federal levels. It was instrumental in the passage of the Illinois Humane Care for Animals Act in 1973, which serves as a model for similar laws in other states[1].
- Investigation and Intervention: HAHS investigates claims of abuse and neglect, using state-licensed investigators to ensure compliance with animal welfare standards. If necessary, it intervenes through legal means[1].
History
HAHS was the first humane society in the United States to focus specifically on large animals, primarily horses. Its founding marked a significant shift in advocacy for hooved animals, as they had previously lacked representation compared to smaller animals like dogs and cats[1].
Operations
HAHS not only advocates for hooved animals but also provides physical rehabilitation for those that have endured neglect and abuse. After rehabilitation, these animals are adopted into compassionate forever homes[3]. The organization relies solely on donations to support its activities[5].
Notable Involvements
HAHS has been involved in several high-profile issues, including raising awareness about controversial practices in the Tennessee Walking Horse industry and advocating for alternative methods to manage wild horse populations[1].

Lady is a stunning 24-year-old Paint Mare available for adoption and a pasture pal at HAHS. If you have met her, you know she loves every visitor she meets and will often nicker to you as you walk into the barn. Lady has become an excellent in-hand partner working with our staff and volunteers. She enjoys halter showmanship, liberty, and in-hand trail obstacles, as well as relaxing walks around the property. If you are looking for a horse to try new and unique in-hand experiences with, Lady would make a great partner.
