EngenderHealth, Inc.
Overview
EngenderHealth, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing sexual and reproductive health (SRH), family planning, and gender equality. Founded in the early 20th century under different names, it has evolved significantly over the years, transforming its mission to better align with global health needs.
History
EngenderHealth's origins trace back to organizations such as the Sterilization League of New Jersey and Birthright, which were involved in promoting sterilization of individuals deemed "unfit" for parenthood. This stance was consistent with state laws for compulsory sterilization at the time, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities. In the late 1940s, the organization shifted towards advocating for voluntary sterilization. By the 1960s, it began participating in the global family planning movement, focusing on voluntarism and choice in surgical contraception.
The organization underwent significant transformations and name changes, becoming the Association for Voluntary Sterilization (AVS), then the Association for Voluntary Surgical Contraception (AVSC), and AVSC International. In 2001, it was renamed EngenderHealth, marking a broader focus on sexual and reproductive health rights.
Expertise and Programs
EngenderHealth specializes in several core areas:
- Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR): Implementing programs to ensure high-quality, gender-equitable services in SRHR.
- Maternal and Obstetric Care: Focusing on reducing maternal morbidity and mortality through better healthcare delivery.
- Gender-Based Violence Prevention: Engaging men and boys in efforts to reduce gender-based violence through programs like Men As Partners.
EngenderHealth works in partnership with governments, local civil society organizations, and communities to deliver these services.
Global Reach
EngenderHealth has implemented programs in over 100 countries across five continents. Currently, they operate in approximately a dozen countries, employing a decentralized organizational structure that ensures local leadership and expertise. The staff is predominantly comprised of local individuals, which aids in understanding and addressing specific community needs.
Recognition and Impact
EngenderHealth received the United Nations Population Award in 2002 for its contributions to family planning and reproductive health in resource-poor countries. The organization's programs have achieved significant impact, including averting unintended pregnancies, training healthcare providers, and preventing unsafe abortions.
Current Activities
In recent years, EngenderHealth has continued to expand its focus on comprehensive sexual and reproductive health rights, emphasizing gender equality and youth engagement in its programming. The organization's strategy, launched in 2019, is designed to advance gender equality through transformative SRHR programs.
Financials
Historically, EngenderHealth's annual revenue has been substantial, supporting its extensive global operations. As of fiscal year 2012, the organization reported revenue of $58,420,745 and employed over 500 staff members.

Today is the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula. Obstetric fistula is a devastating childbirth injury. Without access to surgical repair and reintegration services, women are left to suffer in silence, often ostracized from their families and communities. EngenderHealth has been there for decades, delivering life-changing fistula services. But recent funding cuts put that care at risk. The need hasn’t gone away—and neither have we. Join us. What does it mean to reach more than 2 million people with contraceptive care? It means choice. It means health. It means a future that people can shape for themselves. These are more than numbers. They’re stories of freedom, dignity, and opportunity. In the past year, EngenderHealth worked across 16 countries to expand access to contraceptive care and support people in making informed decisions about their lives and futures.
