Northwest Biology Instructors Organization
The Northwest Biology Instructors Organization (NWBIO) is a professional association for biology instructors in the U.S. and neighboring regions. Established in 1966, it initially comprised faculty from Washington State community colleges and universities. Over time, its membership has expanded to include educators from British Columbia, Oregon, and Idaho.
Purpose and Activities
NWBIO's primary goal is to facilitate dialogue and collaboration among its members, focusing on pedagogical and scientific interests in biology education. The organization provides a platform for instructors to share teaching strategies, best practices, and research findings that enhance the learning experience for students.
Annual Conference
One of NWBIO's key activities is hosting an annual conference, which serves as a significant forum for professional development and networking. The conference typically features presentations, field trips, and workshops designed to cover various aspects of biology teaching. These events are open to all interested participants, encouraging contributions from anyone involved in biology education.
Organizational Structure and Financial Status
NWBIO is registered as a 501(c)(3) public charity, with an Employer Identification Number (EIN) of 20-1121018. Contributions help fund its activities and support educational initiatives in the field of biology.
Outreach and Community Engagement
Apart from its conference and internal networking, NWBIO aims to foster a broader community around biology education. By sharing knowledge and resources, the organization contributes to enhancing the quality of educational programs in the region and beyond.
Membership and Participation
Membership includes a variety of professionals in biology education, such as full-time faculty, adjunct faculty, lab technicians, and graduate students. The organization encourages participation from anyone interested in improving biology education and supports inclusive involvement through tiered conference fees and open abstract submissions.
