HELPING AND LENDING OUTREACH SUPPORT
The mission of HALOS is to promote safe and nurturing homes for children in kinship care. HALOS' mission is to promote safe and nurturing homes for children in kinship care. Kinship care occurs when children are being raised by a grandparent, relative, or family friend. In South Carolina, family members are given preference to take children before they are placed in foster care. There are 57,000 children in SC in kinship care compared to 4,000 in foster care. The children in kinship care have experienced the same trauma as those placed in foster care, but kinship caregivers do not receive the support foster families receive and are often unaware of government and community resources that could help. HALOS fills that gap by providing case management and advocacy for financial and other community resources.
