Outdoor Journalist Education Foundation of America
The Outdoor Journalist Education Foundation of America (OJEFA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the education and support of outdoor communicators. Established in 2004 by the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association (SEOPA), it focuses on promoting the wise and ethical use of wildlife and natural resources.
Objective and Mission
OJEFA's primary mission is to educate and support young communicators in the outdoor industry. This is achieved through various educational initiatives and scholarships that provide opportunities for aspiring writers, photographers, and media professionals to develop their skills.
Programs and Initiatives
One of OJEFA's notable programs is the Lindsay Sale-Tinney Award, established in 2011. This scholarship provides up to $1,000 to support young communicators aged 12-25 in attending professional outdoor media conferences and educational events. Recipients can choose from a variety of events, including outdoor media conferences, national shooting events, and wildlife photography classes[1]. The application process involves submitting letters of recommendation, a personal essay, and an outdoor-themed story.
The foundation also collaborates with other organizations like the Outdoors Tomorrow Foundation, where it co-sponsors a wildlife photography unit within the Outdoor Adventures curriculum[2]. This partnership supports students' pursuit of careers in outdoor communication and photography.
Influence and Recognition
OJEFA's efforts have led to notable achievements in outdoor journalism. Award-winning writers and photographers, such as Simms, have participated in competitions hosted by OJEFA, further highlighting the foundation's role in nurturing talent[3].
By supporting young outdoor communicators, OJEFA plays a crucial role in fostering a new generation of voices in the outdoor industry, ensuring that stories about nature and outdoor activities continue to be told and appreciated.
