Hinchinbrook Farm Society
The Hinchinbrook Farm Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to providing therapeutic horseback riding programs that support the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of children and adults with mental health, physical, or developmental challenges. The Society is registered under the business number 842984403RR0001 and operates primarily in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia.
History and Mission
Founded in 2007 by Patricia McGill, a certified therapeutic riding instructor, Hinchinbrook Farm began as a personal initiative to offer therapeutic riding and family-focused play therapy, especially targeting children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In 2010, to sustain and formalize the program, the organization was incorporated as a registered charity with the support of volunteer parents and community leaders. Patricia McGill leases her hobby farm to the Society for a nominal fee of one dollar per year, reflecting her commitment to the cause.
The core mission of Hinchinbrook Farm Society is to provide recognized therapeutic recreation and riding programs within a pastoral farm environment. These programs aim to promote healing and enhance quality of life for participants, many of whom are referred for therapy by psychiatrists, pediatricians, and family doctors.
Programs and Services
Hinchinbrook offers therapeutic riding and recreational programs year-round, serving both children and adults with various disabilities and challenges. The programs emphasize therapeutic recreation, including horseback riding tailored to individual needs and mental health support. Family and group programs are also available, fostering community involvement and support.
Notably, the Society hosts unique activities such as "Paint a Horse" birthday parties, which combine creative expression with equine interaction, and incorporates techniques like T-Touch™ to enhance therapeutic outcomes.
Partnerships and Community Involvement
Hinchinbrook Farm Society collaborates with local and national organizations to better serve individuals affected by developmental and mental health challenges. It has received support and grants from various foundations and partners including The Windsor Foundation, The Shapiro Family Foundation, J & W Murphy Foundation, St. John Ambulance, and Emera, particularly for training and equipment enhancements such as therapeutic saddles.
The Society also works closely with the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage to develop and promote inclusive programs for disabled community members.
Volunteer and Educational Opportunities
Volunteers play a significant role in the operation of Hinchinbrook Farm. Additionally, the organization benefits from hiring summer students through grants from Nova Scotia and the Canada Summer Jobs program, helping to sustain its therapeutic and recreational offerings.
Location
The Society’s facilities are located in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, where it provides a serene farm setting conducive to therapeutic riding and recreation.
