A Better Chance of Westport Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities to academically gifted and highly motivated young men of color.

Mission

The organization's mission is to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society. It aims to identify, recruit, and develop leaders among young people of color throughout the United States.

History and Program

A Better Chance of Westport began operations in 2002, offering residential programs to talented young men, enabling them to attend Staples High School in Westport, Connecticut. Staples High School is recognized as one of the top-performing high schools in both Connecticut and the nation. The program allows scholars to live in the Glendarcy House, which provides a supportive residential environment staffed by resident directors and tutors.

As part of the national A Better Chance network, the organization places students in over 300 schools across the United States, including both boarding and day schools. Since its inception, A Better Chance of Westport has successfully graduated over 27 scholars who have gone on to attend four-year colleges, universities, and graduate schools.

Goals and Community Involvement

The organization relies heavily on contributions and fundraising events. In recent years, its revenue has been primarily from donations and fundraising activities, with contributions making up the majority of its income. Expenses include operational costs such as salaries and program expenses.
