March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day. This day (03/21) was chosen to recognize those with Down syndrome because of the symbolism of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, which causes the condition in those born with it. It is the most common chromosomal abnormality. Despite the challenges that can come with it, people with Down syndrome frequently live rich, fulfilling lives with the support of their families and communities. Bronx-based artist Eddie Carella creates artwork that frequently returns to mythological concepts and images of “classic movies with hybrids of animals that bring him joy," according to Carlos Wilfredo Encarnación, an award-winning artist who supports Eddie in his endeavors. Eddie's indomitable spirit comes through in his brightly colored pieces. Today and everyday we salute Eddie and everyone else with Down syndrome for their contributions in making our world a more inclusive place. Photo 1: Eddie Carella poses with some of his recent work. Photo 2: A contemporary piece by Eddie featuring his signature mythological motifs, which bright colored hues including greens, reds, and blues.
