In the lead up to Memorial Day, we’re remembering Midshipman Lucius Meade Mason and taking a closer look at his life aboard USS CONSTITUTION. Today, we're featuring several of Mason’s pencil sketches from his journal, part of the Museum’s collection. His log includes time aboard both USS DALE and CONSTITUTION, with detailed entries on weather, navigation, and life at sea — along with harbor views and drawings that reveal his artistic eye. He clearly loved to sketch the world around him! Mason died of illness in 1845 during CONSTITUTION’s world cruise and was buried at sea off the coast of Sumatra — a loss deeply felt by his shipmates. This Memorial Day at 3:00 PM, the USS Constitution Museum will join Boston National Historical Park and USS CONSTITUTION in observing the National Moment of Remembrance with Taps Across America. We will pause for one minute of silence as Taps is played at the Charlestown Navy Yard flagpole by trumpeter John Vetere, honoring those who gave their lives in service to our country.
