Meet YAC finalist Max Salzinger! Max Salzinger, cellist, is an eighteen-year-old senior at The Hotchkiss School and an incoming freshman at Princeton University. Making his soloist debut in 2018 with the Indianapolis Youth Orchestra, Max has also performed solo concerti with the Hotchkiss Orchestra and the Hartford Symphony Orchestra (HSO) as part of the HSO’s 2024 Young Artist Concerto Competition. In 2022, Max attended Interlochen Arts Camp on a full merit scholarship, rotating as a section player and principal cellist of the World Youth Symphony Orchestra. At Interlochen, Max also was a finalist in the concerto competition and was the singular recipient of the Fine Arts Award in Cello. In 2023 and 2024, Max attended the Ascent International Cello and Chamber Music festivals and served as concertmaster and conductor of the precollege cello choir ensemble. Outside of summer festivals, Max placed first in the Senior String Performance Division of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) 2023-24 Connecticut competition. He won the same award during the 2022-2023 season. At school, Max is a three-time featured soloist with the Hotchkiss Music Program at Carnegie Hall and a three-year recipient of the Hotchkiss Music Prize, given to the student who contributes most to the music program. Having performed in lessons and masterclasses for pedagogues including Melissa Kraut, Hans Jørgen Jensen, Richard Aaron, and Rosemary Elliott, Max currently studies under Dr. Chungsun Kim, serves as principal cellist of the Hotchkiss Orchestra, and performs as assistant-principal cellist of the semi-professional Hotchkiss Philharmoni (fb)
