On this day in 1917, Ell Persons—a Black man accused of murder following a forced confession—was lynched by a jubilant crowd in Memphis, Tennessee. Although nobody was ever charged with a crime for this brutal act, it played a part in the founding of the Memphis chapter of the NAACP. In 2016, a class of Facing History students led an effort to commemorate the event—forming a nonprofit, raising funds, and eventually unveiling a historical marker at the site in an interfaith prayer service attended by relatives of both victims.
