Tisket and Tasket Baby Great Horned Owl Update They are now about 8 weeks old and being wild hacked outside and beginning to explore their surroundings. They’re spending most of their time during the day perched in trees on our property, but you’ll also catch them foraging on the ground now and then early morning or later in the day. We’ve conditioned them to come to a specific bench for food while they build up confidence—though at the rate they’re going, it won’t be long before they’re fully independent. We’ve also been getting lots of calls lately about young owls on the ground. It’s that time of year when many fledglings have just left the nest. It’s normal for them to be grounded for a bit as they learn, and though the adults may be out hunting, they’re still caring for their young. If you come across a young owl and aren’t sure if it needs help, please contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator before intervening. In many cases, what looks like a concern is actually a normal part of development. (fb)

This is Maverick, a 2nd-year juvenile male bald eagle recovered near the Rock River in a truly heartbreaking and puzzling state. He was discovered with an old raccoon carcass literally attached to his foot by sinew—the tough, fibrous tissue that can act like rope. We have no idea how long he struggled to free himself, likely for some time as he was critically weak. His body condition tells a complicated story we may never fully understand. Birds have four toes per foot, but Maverick had five on one ( a birth defect/deformity)—though somehow the third digit was severed and missing. The photo illustrates a fifth toe that grew from his middle toe. The other foot sustained less severe injuries as well. There was also a fishing lure attached to the raccoon carcass, although no fishing line was found. Adding to the mystery, Maverick has no tail feathers and very emaciated when recovered. Upon arrival at our hospital, he was completely exhausted, and you can see that in this photo. But the good news is that he is now standing and eating—a critical step forward on what will be a long road in rehab. We are incredibly grateful to the caring individuals who called for help and to our volunteer, Dylan, who was able to safely contain and transport Maverick to receive the care he urgently needed. So many pieces of his story remain a mystery, but what’s clear is this: Maverick is a survivor and fighter. Please keep him in your thoughts as he begins the healing process. We’ll keep you updated on his journey. #hooswoodsraptorcenter #baldeaglesofinstagram #eaglesofinstagram (fb)
