Longtown Mountain Rescue Team
The Longtown Mountain Rescue Team (LMRT) is a volunteer-based mountain rescue organisation serving the Black Mountains region of South Wales, United Kingdom. Established in 1965, the team was initially formed to assist people in difficulties within the Black Mountains. Since its founding, the role of the team has expanded to cover a broader range of rescue situations where police require specialist mountain rescue assistance[1][3].
History and Purpose
Founded in 1965, the Longtown Mountain Rescue Team was created to provide expert rescue services in the challenging terrain of the Black Mountains. Over the decades, the team has developed extensive expertise and now responds regularly to requests from the police to assist in wild and remote areas beyond their original geographical focus[1][3].
Organisation and Staffing
Longtown MRT operates as an independent charity (Charity number 1200854) and is funded and managed by itself. The team is composed entirely of volunteers who come from diverse professional and occupational backgrounds. These volunteers dedicate their free time to combine a passion for the outdoors with a commitment to community service, maintaining readiness 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to responding to emergencies, team members participate in ongoing training to ensure high levels of skill and operational capability[1].
Operations
The team responds exclusively to emergency requests coordinated by the police. Members cannot be contacted directly in emergencies; instead, those in need of mountain rescue assistance must call emergency services (999) and request the police, who then mobilise the appropriate rescue team. The scope of Longtown MRT's operations covers a wide variety of incidents requiring specialist mountain rescue skills, including searches for missing persons, casualty evacuations, and technical rescues in challenging environments[1].
Volunteerism and Community Role
Longtown MRT exemplifies community-driven volunteerism, with members balancing varied careers alongside their rescue commitments. The organisation embodies a culture of service and outdoorsmanship, contributing significantly to public safety in the mountainous regions it covers.
This succinct overview highlights Longtown Mountain Rescue Teamโs key facts, history, structure, and operational role as a vital voluntary rescue organisation within the UK mountain rescue community.
