Gamma Phi Beta Sorority Inc
Overview

Gamma Phi Beta Sorority Inc. is a prominent international college sorority and U.S. nonprofit organization. It was founded on November 11, 1874, at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York. The sorority was the first to be called a "sorority," with the term coined by Dr. Frank Smalley, a professor at Syracuse University, in 1882[2][3].

Founders

The sorority was established by four pioneering women: Helen M. Dodge, Frances E. Haven, E. Adeline Curtis, and Mary A. Bingham. These founders aimed to create a supportive environment for collegiate women during a time when women faced significant challenges in higher education[1][5]. They envisioned a space where women could foster lifelong friendships, intellectual growth, and service to humanity.

History and Development

Gamma Phi Beta has a rich history of expansion and philanthropy. In 1882, it became known as a sorority and expanded its membership beyond Syracuse. It received its charter of incorporation under New York State law in 1880[4]. By 1919, Gamma Phi Beta had become an international organization with the establishment of its first Canadian chapter[4].

During the 20th century, the sorority played significant roles in both World Wars by providing humanitarian supplies, supporting the American Red Cross, and raising funds through War bonds drives[2]. In the post-war period, Gamma Phi Beta continued to grow, establishing a system of provinces to manage its chapters more effectively[4].

Mission and Vision

The mission of Gamma Phi Beta is to build "confident women of character who celebrate sisterhood and make a difference in the world around us." The vision is to inspire the highest type of womanhood[3]. The sorority promotes lifelong commitment, intellectual and personal growth, service to humanity, and ethical behavior[3].

Symbols and Traditions

Gamma Phi Beta's symbols include the crescent moon, pink carnation, and pearl. Its official colors are blush and a-la-mode, with secondary colors being once in a blue moon, pearl, brownstone, and carnation[2]. The sorority's badge, designed by Tiffany & Co. in 1874, features a crescent moon cradling the Greek letters Gamma, Phi, and Beta[2][3].

Philanthropy

Gamma Phi Beta's current philanthropic focus is on "Building Strong Girls," which includes partnering with organizations like Girls on the Run[2]. This initiative reflects the sorority's commitment to empowering young girls and women.

Chapters and Membership

As of 2023, Gamma Phi Beta has more than 246,000 initiated members worldwide, with 137 active collegiate chapters and over 155 alumnae groups in the United States and Canada[2]. It is part of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) and has a strong presence across North America.
