"Both these paintings, “Demerara, Brown Buds Bloom” and “Demerara, Tropical Air,” refer to a real place or feature in the landscape in Guyana, South America. But they also point to the word itself. Demerara means “river of the letter wood” in the Arawak language spoken in Guyana. So the paintings are a reference to Indigenous language and also to that language’s name for a river. Carl E. Hazlewood tends to make work about places that are both real and imagined. These two paintings focus on a real place called Demerara. It’s evident in mid-century Guyanese art that there is a focus on the Indigenous culture as well as the landscape. So with the brown buds that are blooming and the tropical air, both paintings have this strong affinity for the kind of flora that’s right there in the landscape. One thing I will say is that Carl spent the summer of 2024 in his studio making a lot of drawings of small red flowers. I visited at that time and happened to see them. It’s interesting that these two paintings were also made in 2024, because the buds that are blooming have a trace of those red flowers. We don’t know what flower it is, specifically, in the painting, and the artist hasn’t disclosed that information. But all these details may be references for the artist—memories of Guyana." — Serubiri Moses, co-curator Carl E.
