"We stared out at the treacherous, somber surfaces, weathered by wind and storm. The mountains transformed in our minds, revealing an expanse impossible to comprehend. It is upon this sea of summits we desired to stand." Originally published in Guidebook XIV, Ascending the Path, by Charles Denton tells the story of his and his childhood best friend Devin Grdinic's journey to ascend Mt. Whitney. Amid setbacks on both sides, Denton received the The American Alpine Club Live Your Dream Grant in 2024. Denton and Grdinic again make the journey to California with Mt. Whitney's East Buttress (1,000', 11 pitches,5.7) in sight for Denton and the Mountaineers Route for Grdinic. Every year, we publish several accidents involving rockfall. What makes a few of these accidents so scary is the fact that several climbers have experienced this kind of accident just standing at the base of a crag. In this video, Pete Takeda, Editor of Accidents in North American Climbing, gives some tips to avoid causing rockfall while climbing and avoid being hit while at the base of the crag. The Prescription is the monthly newsletter of Accidents in North American Climbing.
