The square and compass is a prominent symbol of the Freemasons, considered to be the world’s largest and oldest fraternal organization. The square and compass are the tools of the architect and represent the building of character and morality. The origin of the symbol is unknown, but is thought to have roots in the medieval stonemason guilds. Walter T. Arnold (1873-1937) was a 32nd degree Mason. He was grand master of the Masons in Connecticut (1925) and the grand patron of the Grand Chapter, Order of Eastern Star (1928). In his professional life, he was an architect. He was the architect of the Masonic Temple in West Hartford (1924) as well as other temples throughout the state. (fb)
