ADODI National
Overview
ADODI National is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1986 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It serves as an intergenerational brotherhood of Black Same-Gender Loving (gay) men across the African Diaspora.
Mission
The mission of ADODI National is to provide affirming experiences and loving gatherings to foster emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being among Same-Gender attracted Men of African descent. This is achieved through a culturally rich environment that incorporates African traditions and values, creating a supportive community where members can be their authentic selves.
History
ADODI was established during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic to offer a mutual support and educational space for gay Black men affected by these health issues. The founder, Ibaye Clifford Rawlins, a licensed creative arts therapist, integrated African Ifa traditions into the organization's practices. The name "Adodi" is derived from the Yoruba language, where the term denotes a man who loves another man and is revered for embodying both male and female natures, often as shamans, sages, or leaders.
Structure and Activities
ADODI National operates through chapters across several regions in the United States, including Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, New York, Washington, D.C., Dallas, Texas, and the Southern Region. These chapters facilitate frequent gatherings and events within local communities, fostering a sense of brotherhood and support.
The organization hosts annual summer retreats and other regional events, which serve as initiation experiences for new members. These gatherings are designed to uplift and empower members while strengthening ties to African cultural heritage.
Principles and Values
ADODI adheres to specific principles, known as Six Principles, which emphasize authenticity through honesty, openness, clarity, sensitivity to feelings, carefronting, and resolution. The Five A’s (acknowledge, appreciate, affirm, accept, Aché) guide the practice of these principles, fostering a language of mutual respect and support within the brotherhood.
Regional Chapters
One of its notable regional chapters is the ADODI Southern Region (ASR), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes brotherhood and spiritual well-being among same-gender-loving men of African descent in the Southern United States. ASR hosts annual winter retreats and provides ongoing support through various community initiatives.
Leadership and Growth
As of recent developments, ADODI has expanded its leadership with new facilitators contributing to the organization's growth and community engagement. These initiatives include cultural exhibits and events that highlight African heritage and resilience within the African American community.
Overall, ADODI National plays a significant role in building a supportive community for Black LGBTQ+ individuals, fostering cultural identity and holistic well-being.
