Summer outings to places of historical interest (on hold 2024-25). Run Bridgnorth's museum, which is open from April to October.

The Bridgnorth and District Historical Society is a UK-based nonprofit organisation dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich history of Bridgnorth and the surrounding South Shropshire area. Registered under charity number 1019102, the society was established in 1934 by Mr. J.T. Foxall with the aim to advance public education in matters of historical and allied nature, especially focusing on Bridgnorth and Shropshire[3].

History and Formation

The society began with 31 members and quickly grew, reaching 62 members within its first year. Dr. Wilfred Watkins-Pitchford served as its first president. Early meetings were held at Bridgnorth’s Grammar School, now known as the Endowed School. In 1936, the Town Council offered the Burgess Hall above the Northgate Arch as a meeting place, though the society only moved there in 1946 after interruptions caused by the Second World War[3].

Activities and Role

The Bridgnorth and District Historical Society organizes regular monthly meetings from October to March, featuring talks by guest speakers on various historical subjects, often supplemented with photographs, videos, and demonstrations. During the summer, the society arranges outings to sites of historical interest for its members. The society also actively collects and preserves historical artefacts related to Bridgnorth's rich heritage[3].

Northgate Museum

A key achievement of the society is the founding and ongoing management of the Northgate Museum, established in 1951. The museum is located above the Northgate at the north end of Bridgnorth’s High Street, housed within the historic Burgess Hall. It is run entirely by volunteers from the society and serves as a focal point for local heritage preservation.

The museum’s collection comprises over 5,000 items relating to the history and archaeology of Bridgnorth and its environs. Exhibits include an Edwardian cash till, a model of Bridgnorth as it was in 1275, a rare 17th-century turret clock, a model of Trevithick’s Steam Engine, local archaeological finds, early clocks and pocket watches, and many other artefacts connected to the town’s past[1][2][4].

Opening times for the museum generally run from April to October, with access on selected afternoons and bank holidays. Admission is free, though donations are welcomed to support the museum's upkeep. Due to the building’s historic nature, access involves steep stone steps and may not be suitable for visitors with mobility issues[1][2].

Governance and Volunteerism

The society is managed by volunteers who are deeply invested in the heritage of Bridgnorth. They not only curate and maintain the museum’s collections but also contribute to educational outreach and community engagement through events and talks[1][3].

The Bridgnorth and District Historical Society continues to serve as a vital custodian of local history, fostering community pride and awareness of the region’s cultural heritage through its museum, talks, and activities.
